Feast like a Viking in our Chieftain’s Hall

The Chieftain’s Hall is where Huso holds its feasts — one longhouse, a hearth in the middle of the floor, benches for 150 guests, and history you can sit inside. The hall is modelled on the archaeology: the chieftain’s longhouse excavated at Borg in Lofoten, and the Viking-age finds at York.

This is where friendships are made over a shared platter, and where the moments worth marking are marked. Food comes off the open flame; the evening itself belongs to your guests.

People sit close here, and your guests become the skalds — tales of valour and adventure told across the table, laughter carrying between the tunes. Torches along the walls, candles down the tables, the hearth burning in the middle of the room — something happens in that light that does not happen under electric light: guards come down, speeches wander off their notes, and people say the things they meant to save for later. A Viking feast at Huso is not just a meal. It is something deeply human: open fire, real mountain food and company, stripped back to what gathering and connection have always been, and a thread to the history that shaped the medieval world.

The Viking tradition of communal feasting

We gather people the way the Vikings did: families, friends and colleagues at the same trestle tables, on benches, sharing a generous local meal with live music and entertainment. That way of gathering is a mainstay of our weddings and team-building programmes, and it is what gives each occasion its warmth.

Every cut over open flame

In our Chieftain’s Hall every cut is cooked over the flames. This is our Viking BBQ: hot-smoked spælsau lamb from local pasture, smoked moose from our own forest, pulled pork from free-ranging pigs and slow-roasted chuck, served with smoked beef butter sauce, herb aioli, grilled marinated root vegetables, roasted potatoes and two seasonal salads. It is served as a buffet, with our chefs carving the roasts at your table. In homage to the traditions of the Vikings we keep to fire and smoke — a feast that honours both our heritage and the turn of the seasons.

We had our wedding at Huso. It was a magical weekend. We couldn't be happier. It's the perfect place to have your dream wedding. The chef and the food are exceptionally good (several guests said it was the best they had ever eaten). The different areas and buildings make the place completely unique. The Viking Hall that sets the mood on Friday, the barn and party room that tops it off on Saturday, in addition to the beautiful area by the water for an outdoor wedding. The owners are very professional and nice who adapt and help with whatever is desired.

Simply put – The best day of our lives – was had at Huso Lodge.

We couldn’t have asked for a more magical and hospitable location for our wedding. And what a dream wedding it was!

There was a lot of planning and emails back and forth, but Huso Lodge facilitated it for us – always with a smile.

The cabins for us and our wedding guests were all really beautiful and diverse in style, with lots of charm – some old fashioned and cozy – others with a more modern touch, but still cozy!

The location around Huso is absolutely spectacular, especially the lake where we had our ceremony, surrounded by beautiful trees, and with a slightly snowy mountain peak in the background.

The outdoor hot tubs and saunas around the lake, is like an outdoor spa, perfect to combine with a refreshingly ice cold swim in the lake. And then you fire up the fireplace in your cabin in the evening. So cozy!

The Chieftains Hall was so atmospheric and old norse, providing a feeling of how the vikings must have had their feasts. The Barn was romantic and old fashioned, perfect for a wedding dinner. The Earth Dome was fun and had very easy to use audio and light system, and the Banquet Hall gave you the perfect rustique vibe for goodbyes to friends and family on Sunday.

The staff and owners were so helpful and warm, and helped us with everything we requested. They gave us the extra attention to detail so that you feel really appreciated and taken care of. And this care and attentiveness – is genuine! They all really want you to have the best time possible! It’s obvious to us that they are not doing this only as a business, but because they enjoy it, because they are good humans, and because they genuinely care.

Things we didn’t have time to do ourselves, like decorating the milk jars outside the Barn, they fixed for us, without any extra cost and on their own initiative. They (Konstanze) brought the brides maids bouquets to our ceremony location for us when we didn't have time to do it ourselves. They (Caspar) helped us decorate the Barn with drapes high up in the ceiling. They went above and beyond for us – to make it a memory for life – and give us the best start possible, for our lives together as husband and wife.

The food was absolutely delicious. From Friday to Sunday, the extra attention to detail came through and the lengthy, but entertaining stories from the chef himself were provided. Like the story of how they slaughtered a huge pig for our Friday dinner, that they were emotionally attached to.

Read my other reviews. I’m usually strict. I have nothing but positive things to say about Huso. Well, ok, maybe some minor things like one fireplace being out of order, and one sauna not fired up at the agreed time, but that’s more or less it. I even wish I could add something negative to add to the credibility of this review, but even that is hard to do!

Yes, it was expensive, but they were generous and fair with us. And very flexible.

We humbly extend our sincere thanks to Bjørn, Danae and all the staff at Huso. We will be back for more lifelong memories with friends soon, and wish you the very best in the times ahead. You deserve it!

Thanks for everything,

Best regards,

Bård & Shohreh

We got married at Huso this summer and had a wonderful experience! Huso has made major upgrades to their facilities, and we were very pleased with the accommodations for our guests. We used all the cabins except for the "viking house". The "barn" that we used for dinner also provided a fantastic setting for the evening.

Huso also showcases Hallingdal at its best, which we greatly appreciate, and which we are happy to share with both locals and long-distance travelers.

All large events will have some challenges, but Bjørn and his team were very helpful and willing to find solutions.

Thank you so much for us! Highly recommended!
